Butterfly effect

In simple words term means "A flap of butterfly wings can create tiny changes in atmosphere that can ultimately cause unpredictable events such as can cause a tornado to appear (or prevent a tornado from appearing)." Theoretically we can put it as "Small change in initial conditions may produce large variations in long terms".

Here I want to put how this theory can be applied in our day today lives.
In his famous Stanford Commencement Speech Steve Jobs talks about "connecting dots looking backward". Had he not dropped out of college and not attended calligraphy classes, we wouldn't have noticed those fine calligraphy fonts in Mac(and ultimately in Windows, as he says!). A small decision in Steve's life results in major change in software industry. If we all try to peep in our past lives and try to connect the dots, try to understand meaning of small small things in past, steps we have taken and effect of those in our current lifetime. You may notice that it were small things only that have mattered most.

A German movie "Run Lola Run"(Lola Rennt) has beautifully depicted "Butterfly Effect". It's a movie about 20 minutes in life of a girl called Lola. Some almost sub-conscious actions of her leads to large changes in her life as well as other people around her. As a example, while running Lola meets a guy on bicycle, who offers her the bicycle, which is apparently stolen or something of that sort. In one sequence she scolds him, which leads in the guy crashing onto someone and then being beggar on street in his later life. In other sequence she herself crosses the guy, Lola apologises and it turns out that the guy sales his bicycle to other character in movie. But effects of previous sequence are undone.
There is another movie "Butterfly effect". It's loosely based on same theory. But it primarily focuses on effects of events on lead characters in the movie, there are no changes in surrounding environment.

Ohhk, enough for today :) .... Just remember, small things count!

Juno ...

I still remember those times when Gladiator and Cast away were competing for Oscars, or Lagaan has made it's entry into Oscars for "Best foreign film" category. The Oscars had generated lot of heat here in India., at least among ppl like us (college going and movie watching community p:). This years Oscars ... I didn't even knew the nomination till recently. And the movies those made it to Oscars... most of them r not released in India yet, in major theaters. May be I have lost the touch ??
Then I came to know about this movie... Juno, through Internet. Noticed that it's doing good in states(and it's romantic comedy). I decided to watch it.
So one day when I got it ... it was around 12:00 in night .. I had to attend office the next day, early in the morning ... So I thought I'll just have a little watch. Generally I don't watch movies fast forwarding if I'm serious abt it. I'll just watch starting bits and make a guess. So it started with opening shot... and then titles and the song "All I'd want is you..." and I left the chair when credits were rolling on screen !!!

here is the song form youtube(Barry Louis Polisar Lyrics, All I Want Is You)

Before I go further, let me tell you one thing movie is really good. I would highly recommend you to watch it. What's written bellow is my interpretation of the movie and not criticism. You may think of some of the content bellow as plot spoiler.

Movie is about a teen girl who gets pregnant, when she is in her 16s. Which causes her to dive into adult world(nothing to do with sex)... world of so called self proclaimed mature people. The girl is real dude, she has her own values, principles and assumptions about the world. Obviously there are clashes with reality and still Juno remains Juno, and that's what the movie is about.

Let's not discuss plot here... What I liked about movie is the screenplay. Director tries to focus on every little detail in story, instead of broadening the focus and trying to make movie more commercial. Juno's character is real strength of the film. She is a teenager and lives life on her own terms. When she came to know about her pregnancy, default option is abortion, She was little emotional about the child or uneasy about abortion center, don't know exactly what, but then she decides to remain pregnant. Thing to watch for is Juno's parents' reaction on her pregnancy, and deciding to keep the baby. I wonder if parents in US are really mature or Juno is just lucky. They have respect for her decision. I couldn't help myself imagining what had happened, if it would have been in INDIA! One thing I noticed in movie is, from director's perspective woman are really sensitive to pregnancy... I mean even if it's someone else. This one thing gets Juno and her step-mom really closer. Juno starts facing the heat when she is visibly pregnant, everybody else starts noticing it, in college, outside etc. Now for everybody it's not someone they know ... Director haven't focused on that side though.
One thing I would like to mention is how Juno chooses the couple to whom she'll give the child. It just a couple of minutes scene but reflects her mentality.
Her relationship with her boyfriend is no different that any other teenager American relation. But it surly changes after her pregnancy.
When Juno finds out that the couple to which she is giving away her child is getting divorced, this is real test for Juno. and this is the time when 2 great dialogues of the movie are delivered

"If your still in, I'm still in" .. Juno.

and "Find the person who loves u for exactly what you r, good mood bad mood ugly pretty, handsome, what-have-you. The right person is still going to think the sun shines out of your a$$. That's the kind of person that's worth sticking with."

So this movie is about Juno and her learning about the world, relationships... If you want to learn... or help other learning; it's worth a watch.

This is another good track from this movie(Anyone Else But You - Michael Cera and Ellen Page)

Happy republic day!
